Pakistan has a significant potential for fruit production. In Pakistan, citrus enjoys first position among 30 other fruits with respect to both area and production. Pakistan holds 13 th position among citrus producing countries in the world. At present citrus is grown on an area of 192. 2 thousand hectares with an annual production of 2 458. 4 thousand tons. Important citrus cultivars are Kinnow, Mosambi, Feuterell's Early, Sweet lime, Blood Red, Jaffa, and Shamber etc. Out of the total citrus produced in the country, Kinnow, a late maturing cultivar, is at the first position occupying 71% and over 78% of the total citrus area and production, respectively. It is the hybrid of King and Willow leaf mandarin and was introduced from California. It is a favorite fruit of Pakistani people because of its good flavor, delicious taste, cooling effect and high production. Pakistan exports fresh as well as processed Kinnow fruits to Iran, Russia, European, Gulf and the Far-Eastern countries. China imported Kinnow fruits from Pakistan for the first time during 2007 -2008. Citrus industry of Pakistan is mainly confronted by the problems like lack of genetic diversity, high number of seeds, low productivity age and yield, alternate bearing, a number of insects, pests and diseases and huge post-harvest losses. Out of these problems, the large number of seeds (about 30 seeds) in Kinnow is a problem of great importance. Citrus breeding in Pakistan includes selection of bud sports in Kinnow mandarin for seedlessness, cross breeding, mutation breeding, interploid hybridization, and recent accomplishments in biotechnology.
