EFFECT OF SE FLUX ON THE PROPERTIES OF POLYCRYSTALLINE CUINSE2 THIN FILMS AND SOLAR CELLS

Polycrystalline CuInSe_2 thin films were deposited by three-stage evaporation method. During growth of the films, Cu and In beam flux (measured as beam equivalent pressure, BEP) were kept constant, while Se beam flux was varied to investigate the impact of Se flux on the structural and electrical properties of the films. In general film-quality becomes better with increasing Se beam pressure associated with larger grain size and better surface morphology. CuInSe_2 crystal becomes more (220)/(204) oriented with Se flux. With a decrease in the Se flux, resistivity of the CuInSe_2 films increases along with a decrease of majority hole carriers. This is probably due to formation of the Se-vacancy and/or vacancy complex. Effect of Se flux on the composition of the CuInSe_2 materials has been discussed. Solar cell performance was found to be strongly correlated to the Se flux condition during deposition of the CuInSe_2 absorber layer. Sufficient Se flux was found to be effective to reduce various Se-deficiency related defect complexes and thereby to get better solar cell performances.
