Digital photography and video technology is often used to process and document complex man-made disaster scenes, such as that of a crane collapsing during scene processing upon the area of potential origin. Better records of early and on-going origin & cause site documentation can be found with the use of laser scanning equipment based upon standard surveying techniques and principles. Laser scanning technology has been used for over 15 years within other industries. This paper explains how laser scanning of debris fields works, the deliverables it can create, its requirements and limitations, and other basic facts. It includes an overview of the equipment available for performing laser scans; important questions to ask laser scanning service providers; acceptance into the court system; the processes of obtaining site data and "parking" that data for potential use; "single scanning" and "progress scanning" processes of debris fields; and more.
