Airport competition is a topic which recently gained interest in air transport research. However,many studies about airport competition focus on airport competition for passengers or passengeroperations. Research about airport competition for air cargo is still scarce. This paper contributesto the understanding of this topic by analyzing the airport choice for freighter operations. Theliterature review reveals numerous factors which influence the airport choice decision made forscheduled freighter operations. For the empirical part, a discrete choice experiment wasdeveloped. Although the empirical part of the study was carried out in Europe, the approach isinternational and therefore also of value for the American air transport sector. A total of 26surveys were collected as input for a multinomial logit model. The results first of all showed thatthe presence of passenger operations at an airport is not a significant factor in the airport choicefor freighter operations. This result suggests the need for analyzing the feasibility and merits ofall-cargo airports. Secondly, the presence of forwarders was revealed to be the most importantfactor. This enforces the idea that due to the recent consolidation trend in the forwardingbusiness, forwarders gain market power in the air transport business. Therefore, future researchon the specific importance of the forwarders in the air transport sector would be useful as well asresearch on the forwarder’s airport choice.
