Urban expansion in China is accelerating with fast motorization and rural-urbanmigration. Megacities are suffering from severe transport-relevant problems, such as,accidents, congestion, green space encroaching, air pollution and social inequity. Thedevelopment of regional comprehensive transportation system is influencing land useintensity, housing and employment distribution. It is becoming increasingly urgent forChinese cities to develop efficient and sustainable transportation systems within nextdecades by learning from the metropolitan planning practices in advanced economy.Aiming at sustainable development, this study investigates the latest comprehensivetransportation plans’ visions and goals of 35 international metropolitan areas, andcompared them with four Chinese megacities. We recommend improvement forChinese cities to follow, including traffic safety, environment protection, congestionmanagement and operation optimization.
