The signalized intersections used by bicycles and electric bicycles with different barrier widths were studied. First, basic bicycle swelling and dissipating models were put forth to describe bicycle traffic flow characteristics. Second, some special data collection methods were designed for the object of study, and eight typical signalized intersections were selected to perform the investigation in Nanjing City in China. Third, a bicycle swelling model and a swelling affecting time model were set up, respectively, according to data collected. Finally, bicycle secondary swelling model was built considering the effect of bicycles dissipating. The results of model analysis show that bicycle swelling weakened, while dissipating strengthened, with the increment of barrier width. At signalized intersections with the same barrier width, bicycle swelling strengthened and dissipating weakened with the increment of proportion of electric bicycles. The models can provide theoretical support for studying conflicts between bicycles and vehicles at signalized intersections.
