A small-diameter explosively-driven shock tube has been constructed for studying the decay of blast waves. Existing data in the literature has typically been collected from large diameter tubes with varying explosive charges spanning the regimes where the strong and weak shock approximations are valid and the boundary layers do not affect the blast wave propagation. In small-diameter tubes, boundary layer growth degrades the strength of the blast wave such that the data is no longer represented by ideal theory. We have explored the conditions in our small-diameter tube at which the boundary layer affects the blast wave and have shown that significant degradation of the blast wave can occur within the intermediate regime where the strong shock approximation is valid.
