The transient aerodynamics of a flatback airfoil during Gurney flap deployment is considered. Testing of the fixed Gurney flaps was also performed over a wide angle of attack range and Gurney flap height to charactrize the effect of the Gurney flap on the flatback airfoil geometry. Surface pressure measurements were acquired to study the transient aerodynamic behavior of this airfoil and to explain the trends in unsteady lift and moment coefficients due to an step input to the Gurney flap position. The importance of such a test is that it shows a fast aerodynamic response due to an instantaneous Gurney flap deployment is achievable and promises highly responsive aerodynamic control capabilities for wind turbine blade load control. The results from this test might be used to develop aerodynamic time constants associated with Gurney flap deployment that can be integrated with different flow control schemes that employ Gurney flap devices.
