This paper aims to study the various approaches to modeling crowd dynamics in the context of an evacuation simulation system, reviewing on one side the complexities of each model and on the other discussing and quantifying their performance when applied to real-life evacuation scenarios. Further, the impact of heterogeneous agents in the fidelity of evacuation simulation will be assessed and a set of agent parameters will be proposed in order to increase the robustness of existing models. Finally a flexible and lightweight agent-based simulation framework will be presented and the early results of basic evacuation scenarios will be analyzed.
