The sound of a dental drill is a major source of fear for both young and old dental patients. Therefore, it is important to improve our understanding of the sound environment in dental clinics. Dental drills emit sounds with several prominent frequency components up to 20 kHz and that teenagers are more sensitive to the dental drilling sound high frequencies than older adults. The C57BL/6J mice model has been widely used for hearing research and has been found capable of hearing a wide range of frequencies using auditory brainstem response threshold measurements. There is a remarkable structural similarity between the human and the mouse auditory systems, and the mouse genes involved in hearing exhibit strong sequence similarities and similar functions as their human counterparts. In this study, we performed an analysis of the behavioral data of the C57BL/6J mice while the mice were exposed to dental drilling sounds to find the effect of the high frequency components of the dental drill sounds on the locomotor activity and anxiety-like behavior. The results showed that frequency components of the dental drilling sound had effects on the perception and behavior in mice. These findings suggest that studies on the C57BL/6J mice model can provide further opportunities to understand dental drilling sounds.
