A succession of engineering studies has highlighted the progressively advanced state ofdeterioration in the primary structural members of the 100 year old steel truss Traffic Bridge spanning theSouth Saskatchewan River near the downtown core of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Although the mostserious known structural deficiencies were addressed in a recent rehabilitation project, a number ofuncertainties remain, including the ongoing rate of corrosion, the existing condition of inaccessiblestructural elements, and actual load paths in the renovated structure. This paper summarizes earlyresults from a structural health monitoring (SHM) study initiated to establish the structural performance ofthe bridge under actual and design loading conditions, and to assess the feasibility of using continuous orperiodic SHM as a tool in future bridge reliability assessments. Static and dynamic field tests weresupplemented by finite element modelling to better understand the load-carrying mechanisms and topredict the response of the structure under anticipated future deterioration.
