A numerical model is developed for direct transient analysis of leaks in pipes using Method ofCharacteristics (MOC). Transient flow is generated by closing the end control valve and pressurefluctuations are sampled only at the valve location. Calculated pressure heads in the pipe are the functionof leak parameters including number and location of leaks as integer values and leak areas as realvalues. In order to find unknown leak parameters in a pipe, an objective function is defined using the leastsquares criterion of differences between observed and calculated pressure heads at the valve location.Regarding the nonlinear objective function and mixed decision variables (leak parameters); a MixedInteger Nonlinear Program (MINLP) should be solved. For this purpose an optimization tool has beendeveloped based on Genetic Algorithms (GA). A demonstrative example is also introduced and detectedfor leak using the presented method. Application of the method found to be practical, reliable and easy touse.
