STRUVITE FORMATION IN LEACHATE RECIRCULATION PIPES OF BIOREACTOR LANDFILLS

A primary operational issue associated with bioreactor landfills is the potential clogging ofleachate recirculation pipes due to the formation of deposits. Studies on calcium carbonate formationhave been performed in the past. Struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O) is another chemical precipitate reported asa widespread problem in the wastewater industry. This study presents results from laboratoryexperiments conducted to investigate the possibility of Struvite scale formation in leachate recirculationpipes. Two types of pipes, HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) and PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), were testedunder three different flow rates using simulated leachate. Significant reduction in concentrations ofmagnesium, total phosphorous, and ammonium-nitrogen were observed when simulated leachate waspassed through the test pipes. The crystal structure and composition of the deposits after eachexperimental run were monitored and found to closely match that of Struvite. The highest scale depositionwas observed for the low flow rate, irrespective of the pipe material
