A third phase that forms in a two component GUV system can serve as a stabilizing agent that allows macroscale domains to remain separate over physiologically significant timescales. These bright red domains were only weakly attracted to the dark domains, and appeared to be piggybacked over them. This suggests that the bright domains might arise from an instability, perhaps associated with a ripple domain. Stored mechanical energy associated with contraction during annealing might form the driving force for these phases.
