Making Geotechnical Education Fun - an Enhanced Look at Sustaining Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering students have changed appreciably in the past twenty years, geotechnical practice has changed appreciably in the past twenty years, and the social context of the rising generation of potential geotechnical engineers is appreciably different than those twenty years ago. Therefore, geotechnical education must also change if it is to sustain the profession. This paper provides effective and creative ways to attract and retain undergraduate geotechnical students by incorporating fun in education. This paper explores ways for geotechnical faculty to use novel experiments, novel homework, creative laboratory experiences, and, especially, humor. The use of lighter, but technically sound, student generated video, compelling case histories where students engage in forensics and devise the lessons learned, fun classroom rewards and ways to make homework more relevant and enjoyable are related.
