Learn by playing: A serious war game simulation for teaching military ethics

摘要

In order to evaluate cadets' knowledge on ethics and laws of war, it is extremely important to plan, design and develop an interactive, role-playing war game simulation. The main objective of such a war game simulation is to facilitate future officers' education and training on the subjects of ethics of war and International Humanitarian Law, but also to provide them-through a simulated environment-with the analytic tools in order to understand why it is so difficult to apply the Rules of Engagement in battlefields and how to effectively face possible dilemmas that could arise in a real situation. Our scenario technically supports a war game simulation that can be played by more than two players who have the opportunity to create alliances. The war game was developed using a variety of 3D tools such as Unreal Engine, World Machine, Mixamo Fuse, etc. In this paper, the scenario, the corresponding electronic platform, the different ways in which it can be deployed in military education will be presented as well as the initial case study with the evaluation of the platform.
