Detection of Small Radar Cross Section Targets at Sea using Coherent Radar

摘要

Microwave marine radar has been used for many decades for general purpose navigation and collision avoidance. Most standard marine radars utilize a non-coherent signal source (magnetron) to generate a high power transmit pulse. New radar technology that offers full coherence between transmitted and received radar signals is starting to appear in the commercial market. While use of coherent radar for civil marine applications has begun, understanding of microwave scattering from the ocean is still not complete limiting the development of optimum processing algorithms for target detection and ocean parameter extraction. This paper provides some results from ongoing research directed at determining scattering mechanisms from ocean and seaborne targets and their relationship to sea state and wind speed.
