A reflective fiber optic measurement system has been developed to simultaneously measure the particle velocity and volume concentration in lean phase pneumatic conveying. The measurement system consists of two similar optical probes, an integrated electronic circuit unit (pre- and post-amplification of optical signals), an analog-to-digital converter, and data collection and post processing software. This paper describes the working principles of the measurement technique and calibration procedures used in measuring particle velocity and concentration. Fiber optic probe measurements are compared to measurements performed by an isokinetic sampling device. In addition, results on both steady and fluctuating particle concentrations are described.
