It is desirable to be able to control the strip thickness profile (crown and feather) during hot and cold rolling so that sheet and strip product can be rolled closer to the theoretical minimum weight (TMW), thereby reducing the amount of excess steel shipped to fill an order. Accordingly, a program was initiated to determine the variation in the strip-thickness profile and crown that can be expected within different hot-strip-mill rolling cycles. The results obtained from typical rolling cycles showed that strip crown decreased rapidly and almost linearly during the first 30 to 60 minutes of rolling when starting with redressed work rolls in the finishing stands. After the initial loss of strip crown, which was sometimes as high as 5 mils (0.127 mm), smaller but rapidly varying changes in crown were observed; these are attributed to factors associated with the thermal aspects of hot-strip rolling. In a separate investigation, strip-thickness-profile results showed that feather edge can be produced by the cold-rolling as well as by the hot-rolling operation. Also additional feather can be produced by cold rolling hot-rolled strip already having a feather-edge condition.
