Seventeen plants belonging to thirteen families were assayed for their antifungal activities against Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid. incitant of root-rot of soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr.). Water/solvent soluble extracts obtained from roots/stems/leaves/seeds/barks were amended to the Czapek (Dox) agar + 0.5% yeast extract medium in 0.1, 1.00 and 5.0% concentrations separately. Extract of Allium sativum showed most inhibitory effect even at 0.1% concentration followed by Trachyspermum ammi, Azadirachta indica, Citus medica, Allium cepa, Ocimum canum and Pinus roxburghii. However, 100% growth was checked by A. sativum and T. ammi at 1.0% concentration. Bark extract of Acacia arabica was more effective than fruit extract at 5.0% concentration which inhibited growth of the pathogen by 47.2%. Leaf extract of Nerium indicum, O. canum and O. santum and root extract of Rauvolfia serpentina at 5.0% concentration were inhibitory for growth by 43.3%, 42.5%, 39.3% and 42.5% respectively; whereas leaf extract of Argemone mexicana had negligible effect.
