JGC has investigated chemical decomposition for the treatment of organic wastes generated at nuclear power stations. By this investigation, JGC has developed a novel technology, the JGC Wet-Oxidation process, which is capable of treating organic wastes. Wastes, such as spent ion-exchange resins, chemical decontamination waste liquor, etc., are oxidized by hydrogen peroxide. The development of JGC process was begun in 1980. A full-scale demonstration plant was constructed in 1987. Demonstration testing has shown this process to be applicable to the treatment of organic materials including ion-exchange resins. In 1994, this full-sized plant was moved to a nuclear power station where it is now being used to treat decontamination waste containing EDTA, a chelating agent.
