On-farm trials have been conducted to test experimental results under farmers' conditions. To get a realistic picture of the grain yield, cost and returns associated with the improved varieties, primary and secondary data were taken from a study conducted by the Division of Agricultural Economics and Plant Sciences of Debre Zeit Agricultural Research Center (DZARC). The data pertaining to this analysis were collected from three sources: the research station, on-farm trials and farmers' fields. The results confirmed that: i) the recommended durum wheat variety yielded 41 to 63% more than the check variety; ii) the technology and extension gaps between the research station, on-farm trials and farmers' fields were found to be high; and iii) the reasons for non-adoption of the proven technology were unavailability of inputs (seeds, fertilizer, etc.), lack of technical know-how, and cost factors.
