One of the important equipments of emergency vehicle is audible warning device. Warning signals generated by emergency vehicles should be audible and recognizable to road users, which is achieved by using high sound pressure levels of warning signal. For that reason warning signals of emergency vehicles can be annoying or even hazardous to emergency vehicles drivers as well as to community. Currently there is no legislation in Poland concerning audible warning devices of emergency vehicles so the levels of generated warning signals may vary among vehicles. In this paper measurements results of sound pressure levels of warning signals generated by different types of emergency vehicles (especially police cars and fire engines), with different siren location, are presented. The measurements were made outside and inside vehicles. The study results are analyzed in the aspects of drivers exposure to noise and traffic safety.
