This paper proposes a medical expert system on the world wide communication network, the INTERNET. Our system consists of two types of programs. One type works on the server computer and the other type works on the client computers. On the server computer, a server program communicates with remote computers. On the remote computers, client rpograms downloaded from the server computer, send requests on diabetes mellitus to the server, receive answers from the server, and show them to users. The server accepts requests from clients, deduces answers with patient's private data and knowledge bases, and returns advice back to the clients. A prototype system is implemented in JAVA language on the WWW (World Wide Web) platform. In this paper, the concept of a remote medical expert system and the construction of the prototype system are discussed.
