The influence of scale, impeller type and diameter as well as impeller speed on the course and the outcome of the batch emulsion polymerisation of styrene has been ivestigated. It has been demonstrated that besides the recipe chose, the impeller speed just sufficient to properly emulsify the reaction mixture, is an important parameter for the course of the process and the product properties in terms of the particle concentration and the particle size distribution. The colloidal stability and, if appropriate, limited particle coagulation as well as secondary nucleation during emulsifier addition are usually completely governed by the (physico) chemical properties of the reaction mixture.
