Recently the steel industry has responded to social and environmental demands. In particular, environmental conservation, including reduce emission of the solid waste, is important for the industry. Nippon Steel Corporation (NSC) has set a new target to cut amount of the waste emission by a half. Eighty percent of the wastes emitted from Kimitsu Works, for example, are dust and sludge from on-site plants. Kimitsu Works has had several dust and sludge recycling plants, as dust mixing plants for sintering plants, cold pellet plant, and briquette marker, but they cannot remove zinc from dust and sludge containing zinc, such as BF gas sludge, BF bug-house dust, BOF gas dust. They were not recycled, since the blast furnace (BF) has a limit of zinc load. Thus NSC has surveyed a system to recycle the dust and sludge generated in steel works since 1997.
