S-layer, a regular surface layer composed of a single spieces of proteins or glycoproteins, has a lot of special characters: being composed of S-layer lattices that have oblique, square, or hexagonal symmetry with a center to center spacing of the morphological units, weakly acidic, MW40, 000 to 200, 000, unstable and easily degraded. It also has many novel functions: shape maintainance, protective coats, surface recongnition and cell adhension to substrates, molecular sieves. Some S-layers even may be a virulence factor. Now S-layer has been found on may bacteria and archaea (Sleytr, 1997).
