Modeling Maneuver Warfare: Incorporating Human Factors and Decision-making in Combat Modeling

Most current models of combat are based on an attrition warfare paradigm, where destruction of enemy forces and material are the objectives. Models based on attrition warfare approaches generally ignore the human processes that lead to victory. An attrition approach to modeling is in variance with modern doctrine of Maneuver Warfare. For example, current U.S. Marine Corps doctrine of Maneuver Warfare recognizes that "the results of maneuver are both physical and moral. The object of maneuver is to shatter the enemy's cohesion, organization, command, and psychological balance." Clearly, any model that does not incorporate "cohesion, organization, command, and psychological balance" cannot reflect the relative strengths and weaknesses of Maneuver Warfare. A serious handicap has been the lack of a conceptual model of Maneuver Warfare on a level that could be incorporated into computer simulations. This presentation outlines a conceptual model of Maneuver Warfare in the form of a Causal Model of Combat, a set of interrelated theoretical propositions describing a causal relationship between combat actions and outcomes. The scope of the model runs from non-combat "deterrence" operations through major wars. It defines and models the sources of victory, incorporates human factors such as morale, cohesion, cooperation, coordination, and fighting spirit, and creates a conceptual model of the degradation of command processes when under stress. The objective is to provide a common taxonomy, define interrelationships, and serve as a springboard towards a more detailed algorithmic-level development of a model of Maneuver Warfare for computer applications.
