This paper covers the author's efforts to implement and extend Randall Beer's work simulating the adaptive behavior of insects using artificial neural networks. In the simulation of insect behavior, the neural nets control both hexapod locomotion and the search for food. The extension of Beer's work modifies that part of his neural architecture concerned with the sense of smell and the search for food. Different possible neural net architectures are described and the distances over which they can effectively search for food are compared.
