An argon plasma induced graft polymerization (PIGP) process has been used to impart durable flame retardancy to silk fabrics. Phosphate and phosphoramidate monomers are known to be especially effective as flame retardants and have been used in this work for this application. Furthermore, in order to improve the grafting and the flame retardant behaviour of the coating on cotton textile, the effect of a pre-treatment with a functionalized triazin-based cross-linking agent has been investigated. Following the same process, flame retardant and water repellent finishes on silk fabrics could be achieved. The flame retardant character of the treated fabrics was investigated by LOI measurements.
