Diamond has many excellent properties, such as high hardness, high wear resistance, low frictional resistance, high corrosion resistance, high thermal conductivity. There are some reports that shows the friction coefficient of as-deposited diamond coatings against ones decreased rapidly. These reports suggest that as-deposited diamond coatings against ones decreased rapidly. These reports suggest that as-deposited diamond coatings can be applied to sliding bearings without polishing. We examined friction coefficients of as-deposited diamond coatings against ones both in air and in vacuum and also friction coefficients of polished diamond coatings against tungsten carbide, silicon carbide, titanium and stainless steel in air as the basic research for application to a sliding bearing. The friction coefficient of as-deposited diamond coatings against ones in air decreased rapidly to a constant value about 0.06. The friction coefficient of polished diamond coatings against tungsten carbide was very stable and about 0.07. Therefore, a pair of as-deposited diamond coatings and a combination of polished diamond coatings and tungsten carbide are expected to be applied to a sliding bearing.
