Microstructures of TiSi_2 Coatings Obtained by Plasma Spray in both Air and Low Pressure Conditions

Effect of plasma spray processing conditions on the microstructures of coatings was reported in this article. Starting TiSi_2 particles (<44 μm) were sprayed. Air plasma spraying (APS) and vacuum plasma spraying with low pressure (VPS) experiments were carried out, respectively, with a conventional DC arc plasma spray device. APS coatings were obtained at two different spraying distances, 100 mm and 200 mm, from the torch exit. The phases present in both APS and VPS coatings were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructures were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical compositions were analyzed by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results showed that, under air conditions, some starting TiSi_2 particles were converted into Ti_5Si_3, which was a major constitution in coating. With increasing the spraying distance, the amount of Ti_5Si_3 was increased pronouncedly. In addition, minor amounts of silicon and silicon oxide, Si-O, as well as titanium dioxide, TiO_2, were also found. In contrast, TiSi_2 phase was predominant in VPS coating. SEM observation revealed that the surface morphology of coatings was characterized by splashing in both cases. It implied that most of the starting TiSi_2 particles were well melted. The phenomena were discussed. This investigation provided a step further toward the understanding and optimizing of the TiSi_2 particles spraying process.
