The total population of Japan is about 120 million with a working population of 64 million. The current ratio of farmers to the total population is about 6% and the number of farmers therefore is 4 million. Of these 800,000 grow pulses. The pulses most commonly grown are the Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), peanut (Arachis hypogea), field pea (Pisum sativum), kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), broad bean (Vicia faba L), and soybean (Glycine max). Other pulses such as chickpea, lentil, small-seeded fababeans (Vicia faba L), vetches, lupins (Lupinus spp) cowpeas, pigeon peas and mung beans are not produced in Japan. The domestic demand for the first six pulses is 5.5 million tonnes per year but domestic production is only 200,000 tonnes per year. In other words Japanese self-sufficiency is only 3.6%. About 91% of the domestic demand or 5 million tonnes is for soybeans. Of this quantity 4 million tonnes are used for oil extraction, 900,000 tonnes for food and 100,000 for feed. The domestic production ofsoybeans is only 100,000 tonnes per year. The rest of the requirement is imported mainly from the USA and Brazil. All the other pulses imported to meet domestic demand come from China, the USA, Myanmar and Thailand
