This paper describes the logic of confirming the functional safety of sensors. A sensor that transmits a high level of energy when it is safe in the detection zone is generally called a safety reporting-type sensor. A sensor that transmits a high level of energy when it is hazardous in the detection zone is generally called a hazard reporting-type sensor. This paper logically defines hazard reporting-type sensors and presents the conditions for confirming the functional safety of hazard reporting-type sensors. They are (i) the check made to see that the sensing function is normal and (ii) the check made to see that safety reporting can be stopped by the energy transmitted when it is hazardous in the detection zone. The latter check is equivalent to check of the NOT function of the sensor. Fail-safe monitoring circuits that meet these two conditions are shown as concrete configuration using fail-safe multiple-valued logic.
