Much of the water in the western United States of America (USA) comes from mountain snow melting in the spring, which is captured for municipal and agricultural purposes. Improved methods to estimate this spring runoff are valuable for planning processes. On approximately April 1, snow water equivalent (SWE) is measured at many watershed locations across the North America to estimate the amount of water that will be released during the warmer months. On the Lexen Creek Watershed at Fraser Experimental Forest, Fraser, Colorado, USA, 72 established points are measured for SWE across the 121-hectare watershed. The amount of water leaving the watershed from Lexen Creek is also measured at a gauging station. The hydrograph of these measurements provides a comparison of the cumulative result of spatial estimates of total SWE and other sources and sinks for water throughout the runoff season. We compared universal cokriging to stand polygon averages and a simple watershed mean for estimating the amount of water available from snowmelt during the spring runoff period. All three methods gave approximately the same result. Precipitation inputs after the snow measurement date of April 1 were found to be more important than the spatial interpolation technique in obtaining good estimates of total snowmelt runoff from the watershed.
