Brachyspira (B.) hyodysenteriae is the etiologic agent of swine dysentery (SD). Several other species of Brachyspira have been defined. Some are considered harmless commensals, e.g. B. innocens and B. murdochii. Another species, B. pilosicoli has thepotential to produce a mild diarrhea, while the pathogenicity of B. intermedia remains controversial. In addition, porcine intestinal spirochetes can be classified into a scheme according to their biochemical properties (1). On a genetic basis, the groups roughly correspond to the hitherto recognised species of the genus Brachyspira isolated from pigs (2), i.e. B. hyodysenteriae (group I), Brachyspira intermedia (group II), B. murdochii (group IIIa), B. innocens (group IIIbc) and B. pilosicoli (group IV). This case study describes prevalences, genetic typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Brachyspira spp. in a combined pig herd with clinical SD.
