A strategy for the prevention of toxoplasmosis in swine is development of control methods. Our studies have focused on understanding the protective immune response against Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection by defining specific responding cells and cytokines. Our experiments attempt to characterize the phenotype of peripheral lymphocytes and the kinetics of production of the Thl cytokines: Interferon gamma (IFNg), interleukins-12 (IL-12) and the Th2 cytokine: IL-10 after infection with T. gondii in miniature swine.
