3 Dimensional (3-D) CAD is now widely used in many industrial applications for new design and also modification of existing design. It represents information in a format that can be visualised easily and which can be linked seamlessly to 3-D Simulation and Plant Information Management software packages. The Automotive, Nuclear and Petrochemical engineering industries each use 3-D CAD to a significant degree. In the Automotive Industry many companies are producing new models on a 3 year cycle as new car sales are closely linked to the launches of new models. Increasingly this is resulting in the design and installation of new car lines within existing facilities. Where this is the case there is a paramount requirement for accurate information concerning the car plant facility. This needs to be used easily within the 3-D simulation package of the customers choice. In a regulatory environment such as the Nuclear Industry the accuracy of plant data is especially important from a safety engineering perspective. It therefore needs to be closely monitored and updated regularly. Often original information takes the form of drawings which require updating and then conversion to 3-D CAD to be of maximum use for engineering project work. The conversion of drawing information to 3-D CAD is often a painfully time consuming process and one which is limited in its effect if the drawings are old and no longer truly reflect reality. Engineering within the Petrochemical industry is often done on a large scale, both physically and financially. This means that the maxim "Time is money" is very true. Therefore careful engineering planning is done to ensure that the physical fitting of vessels and pipes into their plant environment both onshore and offshore goes smoothly without delay or incident. This engineering planning is often done using tools such as 3-D Plant Information Management and CAD packages. These software packages offer powerful capability to the user but are constrained by the accuracy and accessibility of the data input to their geometrical and information databases. All three of these industries have a real need for a cost effective system which can capture 3D data quickly and reproduce this data accurately into 3-D CAD or a similar 3-D viewable format. UK Robotics has recently introduced a laser scanning system called "Light Form Modeller" in conjunction with its partner Zoller & Frohlich in Germany. This system can capture millions of data points in literally seconds. UK Robotics have worked on the task of converting 3-D point data into 3-D CAD models since 1991. Conversion from 3-D point data into CAD objects is achieved by the application of powerful analysis algorithms which have been developed to facilitate swift points to primitives translation. They now provide this technology as a service to customers in the Automotive, Nuclear and Petrochemical industries. This paper describes how the "Light Form Modeller" laser scanner and software works and then moves on to detail projects in these industry sectors which have benefited from this approach. It concludes with a discussion as to the future technical direction and commercial applicability of this technology in new market sectors.
