摘要

A combination of noncontact and contact part digitization approaches has been used to automatically generate three-dimensional (3-D) CAD models for existing parts. First, a noncontact device, machine vision, is used for obtaining digitized datafrom the part. Second, the raw data is processed and a CAD model for the part is generated. Third, the created model is used for guiding a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to capture accurate coordinate data from the feature points of the part. The data is then used to create a dimensionally accurate 3-D CAD model for the part. The accuracy of the developed model is only limited to the accuracy of the CMM (around 0.0002 in.).
