We have used Raman Optical Activity (ROA), which measures a small difference in Raman scattering by chiral molecules using left- and right-circularly polarized scattered light, to investigate the solution structures of glutamate and aspartate containing DAAPs. a-N-acetyl-L-Asp-L-Glu (a-NAAG) is the most commonly naturally occurring DAAP in the vertebrate central nervous system [1] and its biological activity as an excitory neurotransmitter, anti-histamine and mass cell de-granulator have been extensively researched [2]. β-N-acetyl-L-Asp-L-Glu (β-NAAG) has been implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders [3], while N-acetyl-L-Asp and Nacetyl-L-Glu are neurotransmitters in the brain [4, 5 and 6].
