For several years, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) loaded biodegradable polylactide/glycolide acid (PLGA) microspheres have been prepared in our laboratory in an attempt to provide localized and sustained delivery of 5-FU by intracranial implantation? following surgical resection of glioblastoma. A phase I study of 8 patients administered these microspheres has shown encouraging results (1). A phase II study is currently in progress.
