Since the beginning of the nineties an increasing interest has focused on nanoparticles made from solid lipids - solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN)~1. They represent an alternative to the traditional colloidal drug carriers emulsions, liposomes and polymeric nanoparticles combining their advantages and avoiding some disadvantages. Similar to polymeric nanoparticles they possess a solid matrix protecting incorporated active ingredients and allowing modification of the release profiel. Similar to emulsions and liposomes they are composed of well tolerated excipients and can be produced on large scale - thus overcoming the lack of suitable large scale production methods being a problem for polymeric nanoparticles. The increasing number of research groups world-wide working with SLN~1-4 reflects the growing interest in this technology. This paper reviews the present state of art of SLN technology and highlights future perspectives.
