Controlled drug delivery in dentistry has caused considerable interest in recent years. Existing mateirals include varnishes containing either chlorhexidine or miconazole for application to dentures, others include appliances to treat candidal infections and the so-called perio-chips, consisting of gelatine containing metronidazole, for the treatment of acute gingivitis.~1 Fluoride releasing resins, apart from the well established glass ionomer cements, are used to inhibit dental caries~2. the concept has been extended to composite filling materials~3 and to dental delivery systems.~4 Patel et al have also shown that the poly(ethyl methacrylate)/tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate (PEM/THFM) system to have superior release properties of gentamicin compared to conventional bone coments.
