摘要

The lobster industry is a vital component of the economies, customs, and lifestyles of communities throughout the eastern coast of North America from Newfoundland to northern North Carolina, which represents the range of the American lobster (Homarusamericanus). This billion dollar industry includes both fresh and processed product. Lobsters are sold locally, shipped live to worldwide markets, processed, or held in storage facilities (lobster pounds) for sale at a later (weeks to months) date to take advantage of market prices for live product. At present, the industry relies entirely upon 'wild' stocks. There are currently no commercial hatcheries or rearing facilities for H. americanus in North America.
