The use of the friction stir welding (FSW) technique to assemble thin aluminum plates in aerospace applications brought about the need for nondestructive testing technologies that allow the detection of small defects inside the weld but also on its surface. The ultrasonic phased-array system has been adopted in order to find volumetric discontinuities and the eddy current array system has been used in order to find the surface discontinuities on the side of the weld opposite the probe.
