Eiectrophoreticaliy detected variation in seed storage protein (giutelin, proiamin) and waxy protein was analyzed among 150 local rice cultivars collected from six distinct regions of Myanmar. The variation in storage endosperm starch was found by mealkali digestibility test. Variation in seed storage protein and endosperm starch led to the characterization of two vanetal types for giutelin, five varietal types for proiamin, and three varietal types for waxy protein and alkali digestibility score. The protein profiles and alkali spreading score were compared with those of standard varieties, using Kinmaze and IR36 as controls Seventy-nine percent of the local rice cuitivars in Myanmar belonged to the IR36-type group and 0.7% of the cu tivars were of the Kinmaze type. Four other types were differentiated by isoelectric focusing analysis from both Kinmaze and IR36 types.
