In this paper, we propose a new optimization scheme of the strength of spectral subtraction based on musical noise assessment via higherorder statistics. Spectral subtraction often generates artificial distortion (so-called musical noise), and in this paper, we focus on such musical noise. Musical noise is related to the artificial tonal components in remnant noise. Thus, first, we propose a criterion to measure the generated tonal components based on noise's kurtosis. This criterion enables us to quantify the amount of generated musical noise. Next, we proposed a new spectral-subtraction-control scheme based on the proposed criterion. Finally, we confirm the advantages of the proposed scheme with subjective evaluation.
