Globalisation, convergence of multiple technologies, new standards in evolving markets, emergence of direct contact between producers and the end-user, customisation, and eco-sensitivity are mega-trends that have a profound impact on the practice of engineering designers and design managers [1]. These trends challenge companies and engineering designers that work for them, to develop products that can be customised to many different clients, by adapting functionality as well as the service they provide. At the same time these products must be produced flexibly as well as economically around the world, must be marketed on a global scale, and sustainability and ecological soundness need to be addressed. Cross-national teams accept these challenges with involvement of subsidiaries from all over the world. The changes induced in product development processes by the trends mentioned before, should be reflected in the education of engineering designers [2]. Skilled people are a prerequisite for competitiveness [3], therefore global product development and manufacturing as well as getting experience with working in international teams should be given a place in the engineering design curriculum.
