Field-scale trials were conducted to examine the effect of timed insecticide applications on infestations of the sugarcane borer Eldana saccharina and subsequent sucrose yield. Higher yields were obtained from insecticide-treated blocks. This was significant in four of the eight trials conducted. The influence of treatments on arthropod abundance was examined, and showed that no clear effect was evident on the abundance of ants, an important group of Eldana predators.
