After 30 years of development and introduction, electronic initiation systems are now well established inblasting applications, both mining, quarrying and civil works. In terms of blast technology, it could beconsidered that timing is the new challenge: how to define the most appropriate sequence to improvefragmentation, reduce vibrations, avoid dilution, eliminate damage… Some classic tools have beenupdated and adapted to the new scenario, and are giving us good performance; on the other hand, othersshould be considered obsolete, given the accuracy of electronic initiation systems has exposed thesetools to incoherent conclusions. Besides, other tools have appeared and are in use, providing newapproaches to old issues. Additionally, not only the technical side has to be considered: safety, security,economics are well present in daily blasting activity and affect to the final decision: are electronicinitiation systems the right answer to my blast?In the paper some of these tools have been reviewed in real applications (vibrations control in an urbanquarry; fragmentation, macro and micro, in an open pit nickel mine; productivity in an underground goldmine; and vibrations in urban tunneling development), and some relevant conclusions are shown interms of reliability. Finally, economic analysis of each application is described as ultimate decisiondriver.As a summary, meanwhile vibrations are well described using classic methods with non-electricdetonators, if electronic initiation systems are used these classic methods are not accurate enough andadditional tools (seed analysis, 2D and 3D superposition analysis) are needed; then depending on thelevel of tolerance needed, vibrations can be controlled properly by using non-electrics instead ofelectronics, with subsequent economic impact. In fragmentation analysis, microcracking calculations arewell supported and explained by using electronic detonators, obtaining conclusions that are not properlysupported with non-electrics; subsequent economic impact is relevant and can justify go to electronics.Finally, in terms of production and safety, electronic detonators provide added value to the users and hasa positive economic impact in certain mining operations.
